On Monday 1st of April Del came in to talk to us about how to save someone. First we wrapped a partner’s arm with a bandage. After that we wrapped a bandage around the person’s head. Del showed us the way to wrap a bandage around a person’s head or arm. Then we were shown how to do CPR. We had 6 dummies and all took turns performing CPR. Then we were taught how to prevent someone from choking. Finally, we were taught how to deal with burns and were told the most common method of burn in the world was hair straighteners!
Pendulum investigation!
On Thursday 4th April, we were given a piece of paper on how to set out a science experiment on our own and created our own which was all to do with pendulums. First of all we had to decided on a name (question on what we would investigate) for our investigation. Secondly Miss gave us a post-it each to write our predictions on. Many of year 6 added a link to real life in their investigation. Miss then came round to check them before telling us to copy them into our books and carrying on with our investigation, step by step, without ANY help!
Then, in the afternoon we carried out our investigations, and, funnily enough, we all chose the same theme for our investigation: How does the length of a piece of string affect the number of oscillations a pendulum makes? Me and my group found out that the smaller the length of string, the greater the amount of oscillations a pendulum makes. Finally, we created tables and graphs using our recorded information.
First aid training
Today is April 1st and a visitor came into our school to teach Y5/6 about first aid and CPR. First he told us a true story about his friends and family and gave us advice about riding a bike “Always were a helmet because a small accident can be a big issue”. Next he told all of the pupils to find a partner to work with then he told us how to put a bandage on a cut or a burn. After that he said to pretend that we had a cut or a burn and ask or partner to put a bandage on our cut or burn and then the other person would do it to their partner then we wrapped the bandages on our head. After a while we practised CPR on a foam dummy. First we had to check that he was breathing then do 30 heart compressions then check again if he was breathing. At last the next person would have a try and then we all had a talk before it finished.
First aid
Today, (1st April) a first aider came into school to teach us first aid and CPR. We had to find a partner and wrap a bandage around their arm and their head. Then he told us a true story about his cousin’s son – his cousin’s son was riding his bike and didn’t wear a helmet and his foot slipped off the pedal and banged into a car. He went to hospital and found out that he couldn’t see for the rest of his life so the first aider said to us always wear a helmet when you are going on your bike or scooter.
Making a pulley
Yesterday my friends and I made a pulley. The first thing you do is that you connect your wheel with a grove to your pulley block. Then you poke a hole through either side of the cup and pull a string through either side, then connect string with a cup pn the bottom to your pulley block. Then you have yourself a pulley! After we made the pulley Miss judged our pulleys and Calum’s group won!
Wednesday 27th
On Wednesday we were making pulleys and it was lots of fun. Everyone enjoyed making pulleys and they all worked!
Making Pulleys
This week we have been designing pulleys to link in with our topic ‘Rollercoaster’. We used all sorts of equipment such as: pulley blocks, plastic cups, skewers etc… Once we had built them we all compared our builds and voted for a first, second and third. After that in our science books we wrote a step by step guide about how to make a pulley.
Making pulley sytems
On Wednesday 27th March the class had to make pulley systems in pairs. I worked with Ffion. We could use a pulley system set and recycled materials and string, sellotape/sticky tape and scissors.
Oakwood Representative
Last week Mr Stone from Oakwood Theme Park came to talk to us about our questions to link in with our topic ‘Rollercoaster’. We set up an interview where we would ask him questions about the park while Mrs Cooper videoed them. Once we had done this, we transcribed the event by listening to the conversation on a device with a peer/friend. All in all our class really enjoyed the visit and we are really excited about maybe having a possible visit to Oakwood Theme Park!

Making a pulley
On 28th March our class made a pulley out of junk material. My partner was L.S When we finished our pulley we showed the class how it worked. Later that day we had to write instructions on how we made our pulley, it was so much fun!
