Oakwood!!!

On Thursday, 6th June, year 5/6 went on our trip of the year to Oakwood Theme Park!!! However, before we set off, the day before, we found that, as there was only 19 people going, we couldn’t afford the bus! Fortunately,  we found a smaller bus that we could afford, so the trip was back on track.

When we got there, we started of with going on ‘Speed’, a roller-coaster with a 115ft drop, loop the loop, and a corkscrew! I was one of the first on it. following ‘Speed’ we came back down to earth when we went on ‘Treetops’ 3 times. Our next destination was ‘Megafobia’, which we went on twice, a wooden roller-coaster and also voted as the UK’s NO.1 wooden roller-coaster. Following this, we all went on the bobsleigh once and then back onto ‘Megafobia’ twice once more. Just before lunch, we boarded ‘Spooky 3D’  a ghost train of which you also have 3D glasses on. While we waited for everyone else on ‘Spooky 3D’ we all went onto ‘The Cauldrons’, which were trampolines.

Then, following lunch at the entrance to ‘Neverland’ we went on some of the ‘Neverland’ rides, which started on the ‘Jolly Roger’ a small rocking pirate ship. After this, we went on ‘Tink’s Flying School’ and ‘Skull Rock’, which was a small log fume.

Leaving ‘Neverland’ it was time to check out the newest addition to the park, ‘Dizzy Disk’, which was a bit like the ‘Jolly Roger’ but it was on a track, you rode on a circle disk, standing up, and, as the name suggests, spins around at the same time, trying, to make you dizzy. After this experiment, we went on the ‘Pirate Ship’, and I asked for the person who was controlling the ride to go full pelt, and he did! Then, to conclude the day, we had the choice to either go to the shop with our spending money, or, go on the 100ft high log fume, ‘Drenched’. I chose to go on ‘Drenched’, and I went on twice, once at the back, and the 2nd time on the front! Then, as we weren’t allowed on again, but weren’t allowed to the shop as we were too wet,  stood on the bridge at the bottom of the drop and got just as wet as we did at the front of the ride.

Finally, after a thrilling school trip, it was time to head back home! 🎢

Martyn Evans artwork (in art)

In art we looked at the artwork of Martyn Evans who is an artist from Aberdare in the Rhondda Valley. Martyn Evans created artwork based on things in his local area and South Wales. However, they would always be coloured with bright, vibrant and cool colours. Sometimes he even changed the look of the buildings he drew into more wonky things. Then on the following day, we had a go for ourselves at drawing things in our local area and changed them into how Martyn Evans might have drawn them wih lots of vibrant colours. I drew one of St Johns Church in Alltwen (in-between Rhos and Pontardawe).

First aid surprise!

On Monday, 1st April, we had a visitor who tuned out to be a first-aid person came in to help us be more aware about first aid. He taught us how to help someone if we found hem lying on the floor, how to help someone if you thought they were choking and how to treat a highly serious burn and what it does to your skin. However, to start with we learnt how to treat a nasty cut, and how to tie a bandage around it. Finally to finish of, we learnt about the dangers of hitting your head and the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike.

Pendulum investigation!

On Thursday 4th April, we were given a piece of paper on how to set out a science experiment on our own and created our own which was all to do with pendulums. First of all we had to decided on a name (question on what we would investigate) for our investigation. Secondly Miss gave us a post-it each to write our predictions on. Many of year 6 added a link to real life in their investigation. Miss then came round to check them before telling us to copy them into our books and carrying on with our investigation, step by step, without ANY help!

Then, in the afternoon we carried out our investigations, and, funnily enough, we all chose the same theme for our investigation: How does the length of a piece of string affect the number of oscillations a pendulum makes? Me and my group found out that the smaller the length of string, the greater the amount of oscillations a pendulum makes. Finally, we created tables and graphs using our recorded information.

Making pulleys

This week we made pulleys out of lots of bits and bobs and had to lift materials inside a container using our pulleys. We had to wrap the string around the wheel and tie it to our container. My one wasn’t as successful as others but it still worked really well.

Our mock baptism at St John’s Church in Alltwen!!!

On Friday, 15th of February, our class went to St John’s Church (Alltwen) to have a mock baptism. We did the complete service and got dressed during the lunch hour into are super duper smart shirts, suits, waistcoats and the girls wore pretty dresses. I, (Ben) was chosen by are class teacher (Mrs Cooper) to be the dad of the baby doll who the local priest of the Parish Of Cylybebyll then baptised. Other of my peers were the mum, neighbours, grandparents, godparents as well as friends and family. During a talk with the priest two days earlier, on Wednesday the 13th of February,we decided the name of the baby doll and confirmed during a vote that HE would be called Le Bron, after a famous basketball player called Le Bron James. We then decided of a surname of Stevens as the name Steve was voted as the second highest in popularity after Le Bron.

Our Welsh Week Eistedfod and world book day!

On Thursday, 7th March, year 5/6 took part in a whole school eistedfod for our welsh week celebrations. For the entire week, we had to learn a poem and lots and lots of Welsh songs, including the national anthem. Then on the Thursday, in the afternoon, we went to the hall to join the rest of the school to sing our songs and recite our poems in front of a judge who came to see how good our school is at Welsh. Then, the following day (on Friday the 8th of March) we celebrated world book day by dressing up as our favourite book characters and creating book reviews about our favourite book. However, other people were allowed to come to school in pyjamas as well as this.

Dydd Miwsig Cymru (Welsh Music Day)!

On Friday 8th February 2019, our class celebrated Dydd Miwsig Cymru (Welsh Music Day) by learning lots and lots and lots of different Welsh songs by some Welsh singers and some English singers too! In the morning before play, we learnt songs by Welsh singers, from bands called Swnami and Candelas. Then after play we had to write about the two of the bands. In the afternoon, we did the same thing but with ones that sing in English, such as Tom Jones and Catotonia. 🎹🎶🎸🎤🎧🎵♩

Our trip to the Persimmon’s ‘Alt y celyn’ building site!

On Thursday, 21st of February, the whole school,  including year 5/6, went to the building site across the road from our school on a trip on how building sites operate and to also have a look in a nearly finished house as well as this. Once we arrived there we walked up to the furthest house that was under construction to have a talk about what builders do there and how they do it. Following this, we went into a nearly completed house to look what many of the houses will look like inside. At the end once we had looked inside the house we collected some persimmon bags with a booklet on ‘Alt y celyn’ and a few things from Persimmon before leaving and returning for lunch! 🏘
